VOLUNTEER COORDINATOR

Reports To: Development & Communications Director; works closely with other staff
Hours of Work: 4 hours/week on average, year-round. Some evenings and weekends required. Flexible scheduling is offered.

Compensation: This is a volunteer position
Responsibilities: To implement an effective, organized volunteer program for an established 37 year old land trust, and to engage Land Trust members and friends through direct service with the organization.

Duties:

  • Help design volunteer projects/assignments and deliver feedback
  • Recruit, train, organize, and supervise volunteers
  • Update volunteer information in the database to track their hours and interests
  • Develop and implement a recognition/ retention program for volunteers
  • Post volunteer listings on relevant boards, newspapers, and websites such as volunteermatch.org and craigslist, and track responses/referrals
  • Maintain communication with all volunteers
  • Other volunteer-related work as may be requested from time-to-time.

Job Skills:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with both program staff and volunteers
  • Self-motivated
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Comfort with speaking to groups and individuals by phone and in person
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite

STEWARDSHIP INTERN

Reports To:  Land Protection/Operations Manager.  Works closely with executive director and development director.
Hours of Work:  15 hours/week during April and September; 30 hours/week from May – August.  Some evenings and weekends required.  Flexible scheduling is offered.
Education:  Graduate student preferred.
Preferred Experience:  Appropriate course work in biology, ecology, natural resources and/or related fields.
Compensation:  $15.00/hour.
Responsibilities:  Responsible for conducting stewardship activities for 37 year old land trust.  This includes insuring 100% monitoring of easements and preserves, as well as organizing ongoing stewardship work in four fee-simple preserves, and coordination of three volunteer work days.  Other hands-on stewardship may be assigned as time permits.
Duties: 

  • Coordinate monitoring on over 30 conservation easements.  This may be done collaboratively with volunteers or other Land Trust staff; ensure 100%  completion of same by 9/30/08.
  • Monitor five fee-simple preserves owned by the Land Trust.
  • Review existing management plans for four preserves, developing five year implementation plans for each, including the identification of required resources.
  • Coordinate at least three volunteer work days in preserves.  This work may be coordinated with the Stewardship Network.
  • Initiate work on a management plan for a newly acquired preserve
  • Other hands-on stewardship work as may be assigned from time-to-time.

Job Skills:

  • Strong oral communications skills
  • Ability to organize, implement and manage a variety of projects
  • Ability to work well in small team/office environment
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite. 
  • Ability to work with volunteers and coordinate the work of volunteers
  • Working knowledge of Michigan natural habitats
