This award is the latest achievement in a lifetime of conservation. In addition to being the Director of Foundation Giving for the University of Michigan, Ms. Martin is completing her sixth and final year on the Board of Trustees for the Washtenaw Land Trust. Martin has worked tirelessly for this organization, particularly its unique farmland mission.
Formerly a Director of Development for the Nature Conservancy, she also worked as a Burn Crew member. Her commitment to ‘Ballot Initiative Politics allowed her to be influential in leadership positions in Washtenaw County’s landmark initiatives for purchase of development rights and acquisition of natural areas.
She has lent her energies to fundraising for land trusts across the state, and to educating those around her in effective fundraising as well.
She serves on the board of the Michigan Land Use Institute and the Stewardship Network, and has served as a resource to countless land use, conservation and related projects across the state.
“I think it’s safe to say that she has provided a spiritual heart for the organization,” said fellow Land Trust Board Member Jim Govert, “Maureen and her actions remind us why we do what we do.”
“We thank Maureen leadership and her tireless commitment to ensuring that Michigan’s legacy of conservation perseveres into the 21st century,” said Susan Lackey, Executive Director of the Washtenaw Land Trust.
The first land trust in Michigan, Washtenaw Land Trust
is a group of over 1,000 individuals, families, and organizations
working together to protect the natural areas and rural landscapes
that make our community a great place to live. To date, the
growing organization has protected 48 properties totaling
more than 2,500 acres throughout Washtenaw, Jackson, and Ingham
counties, through voluntary land conservation.
The Washtenaw Land Trust is a private, non-profit, tax-exempt
501(c)(3) organization. For
